Super Loco’s Earth-Friendly Mexican Feast by the Marina
A quaint lookout over the Singapore Marina, boisterous Mexican bar bustle, and environmentally-friendly grub — that’s what’s going down over at Super Loco this month for Earth Month from 4 April 2022 to 30 April 2022.
For 2022, Singapore’s most popular Mexican restaurant group has specially designed a special menu to celebrate their endeavours towards sustainability over the years.
Each outlet will showcase its own take on sustainable fare through a four-course with a mind toward zero-waste, but which better outlet for an all-Mexican fiesta than Super Loco’s idyllic riverside outlet at Customs House?
With tall windows letting superb views of the skyline fill your periphery and vibrantly coloured banners trailing throughout the space, Super Loco’s setup at Customs House is as luxurious as you get for Mexican food in Singapore.
Aside from that, each four-course will go towards repopulating the dwindling tree population, as part of the proceeds go towards planting a new tree. Along with that, the Loco group will match it and plant another tree on your behalf.
Wondrous Starters
At $80, Super Loco’s Earth Month Menu starts you off fast and decadent with a welcome drink and the quintessential Mexican meal curtain-raiser, Corn Chips and Guac.
While I’ve had this unassuming starter snack multiple times at different Loco group outlets, this time was the most perfect it’s been — immensely piquant and rich salsa along with buttery smooth guacamole just complemented the corn chips so immaculately.
They’ve also prepared a stealthily punchy tipple for your imbibing pleasure in the form of the Zero Hero Cocktail. And a Mexican fiesta is never complete without booze.
Super Loco had thoughtfully infused the concoction with fruit offcuts so brims with tropical fruit vivacity. Hidden within that was a beautiful touch of Mezcal smoke adding tons of personality to stand out from your typical tiki drinks.
The next dish of Garden Flautas then brought about an interesting switch up in profile. Unlike the corn tortillas that most of us are familiar with, the crust is made using fried flour tortilla.
And it makes an interesting distinction, with the lack of corn richness helping the earthy ensemble of Mexican Truffle, Quinoa, and Goat Cheese achieve a gratuitous oomph. Crunchy outside, while the inside is punctuated with a medley of textures and a coat of roasted pumpkin seed puree elevates the whole quartet.
Main Show Was a Good Show
As a self-professed carnivore who also loves meatless alternatives, I was more than overjoyed when presented with the Fable Al Pastor Taco.
Despite its lack of meat, the ensemble of mushroom, watermelon radish, and crispy kale might be one of the best tacos I’ve had at Super Loco. They each delivered their distinct textures rather articulately, while being satisfyingly flavoursome. The only complaint might be a slightly thick skin.
In designing the Earth Month Menu, each one of the Loco Group siblings put their own spin on a sustainably fished Barramundi. For Super Loco Customs House, they stylishly went for a simple Pan-Roasted Barramundi.
As far as Barramundi goes, this was well executed — its skin was delectably crisp while the flesh was rendered soft and moist A earthy zing from some sprightly salsa verde then comfortably blanketed the light profile of the fish.
Super Loco has had some pretty flashy dessert specials in their books but this time they’ve kept it simple with a Pomegranate Tres Leches.
A creative interpretation of the classic — this version was sectioned into three distinct layers of pomegranate seeds, pana cotta, and cake. Maybe a bit too much of the dense cake, but still very delightful when coated in some of that charcoal crumble and the pool of milk.
Super Loco is one of the oldest names in the Singapore Mexican restaurant scene, and it’s easy to see why. So many years from inception and they still strive to reinvent themselves and even through that fearlessness, they manage to come up with some top-drawer stuff. Salut.
