Chaos Ensues with Tezarekt’s Random Cocktail Generator at JU95 Izakaya
Sometimes, drinking doesn’t need to come with all the ornate embellishments and finesse that comes with bars that rank among the World’s 50 Best. Our best nights are those where memories are hazy and tequila shots are muddled into our bloodstream.
Whichever way you prefer, imbibing should be an activity that brings joy — and Tezarekt is here to introduce a new kind of joy at JU95 with their random cocktail generator.
As weird as that sounds, yes, we’re talking about a system that randomises your drinks for the night. And Tezarekt’s newest invention is only found at JU95, for now.
But don’t mistake the word “random” for “thoughtless”. The machine doesn’t churn out Frankenstein concoctions as if possessed by a drunk college kid playing King’s Cup.
There’s more method to this madness. You get something akin to a Gashapon system where curated ingredients are put in, with ratios weighted. So your bespoke drinks will not end up with 50% fernet and 120% absinthe, don’t worry too much.
For those in the know about NFTs and Web3 —and other jargon admittedly too foreign to my uninformed consciousness— you also get to reap rewards such as fragments that can be exchanged for points, NFTs, and more other goodies.
The Joy of Chaos
If you’re as picky and particular about your drinks as I am, sometimes it’s torture to peruse through detailed menus ad infinitum. Tezarekt’s random cocktail generator saves you the headache and leaves it up to fate.
When you start up the machine, you’re greeted with a choice of EZPZ ($19.50), Normal ($23), and Get Rekt ($26). Like choosing the difficulty level at the start of an arcade machine session. Neat.
Being a self-professed functioning alcoholic, the Get Rekt ($26) was an instantaneous choice — couldn’t pass up on an unholy trinity of three different spirits.
Surprisingly, Tezarekt’s Random Cocktail Generator came up with a truly havoc-inducing combo — Tequila, Vodka and Suntory Whisky. Even more surprisingly, the result wasn’t too bad, tasting like a more potent version of a highball, but without that pristine balancing.
However, I was informed that the Normal ($23) was the best way to experience the full potential of Tezarekt’s Random Cocktail Generator with a balanced proportion of two spirits and two mixers.
Honestly, I don’t even quite remember what spirits were in it —that’s how much fun I was having— but I remember the key ingredient, pandan. A decently balanced tipple, worth a try for anyone nursing an obsession for creative local-inspired cocktails.
Ju95, the glorious Sideshow
While Tezarekt’s random cocktail generator was the star, JU95 did a great job complementing it at the sidelines too, dishing it some delectable snacks from their menu.
One classic that came out, the Parfait Ju ($16/2pcs), was particularly memorable. Flaunting an ensemble of chicken liver and fermented mushrooms atop Koji sable, it was a creamy, complex and gratifyingly funky blast of flavours.
Putting a spin on the classic Izakaya snack, JU95’s Baby Squid Crunchies ($16) are dusted with whiffs of umami curry powder that make them too addictive to put down — a perfect drinking companion for whatever the machine throws at you.
Tezarekt’s random cocktail generator will throw the most whimsical and unorthodox combinations at you, but the JU95 bar team will also try their best to tame the craziness.
At the end of the day, this ain’t a serious craft cocktail experience but if you’re looking for a novel drinking sesh, the future is here.
