The general perception of French cuisine is one of opulence and class, and one of Haute Cuisine. The French culinary canon transcends these misattributed confines — homely food is just as integral to the French as they are to the Italians. Amongst a wave of casual French dining restaurants popping up all over Singapore, LouLou is perhaps one of the most underrated.
There was a sort of palpable excitement as I planted myself into one of the chairs at Olivia Restaurant & Lounge. After staving off a visit in fear of disappointment, a visit was finally planned for this acclaimed Spanish restaurant that sits at the heart of Keong Saik’s crossroads.
Standing before Lolla’s shopfront before your dinner is a slightly quizzical experience. The facade suggests a small, cramped shophouse space that feels more apt as the setting for a modishly bohemian speakeasy than one of Singapore’s most beloved hidden restaurant gems.
You feel like you’re at a house party. The vivid tint of technicolour lights, the communal table where strangers strike up rapports across invisible dividers between their seats, the small, cosy balcony lushly populated with greens and rattan — JUICE is a wine bar that feels wonderfully homely. [Update: Kinou has closed.] An utterance of “Basque food” to the average Singaporean would probably elicit a response of “oh, creamy molten burnt cheesecake right?” And then get showered in quizzical stares as you go on about the culture-rich Basque regions of Spain and perhaps even more eyebrows raised when you dive into its Southern France territory, and that’s Kinou’s prime directive — a conduit to the magnificent flavours of the region.
A narrow pathway led inward. Slightly cramped and dimly lit. Four steps in, eyes get arrested by glimpses of a soft tangerine glow spilling in from the right. [Updated: Papa Doble has closed.] New beginnings are never easy, especially with an already thriving brand. For Papa Doble though, the complete rebranding from The Old Man Singapore is still in its early days but it’s been promising — they just clinched #61 on the newest edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, after all.

A most glamorous recreation of a classic American speakeasy, Manhattan is an institution that embodies all the free-spiritedness and stylishness of the archetypal New York bar. Anyone looking for American hospitality won’t find a better bar in Singapore than the current No. 9 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2022.
