“Mise-en-scène” is a term that describes the setting of a scene in a play, film, or art piece. It encompasses every fine detail from the mood and the lighting to space usage. To me, complimenting a restaurant for crafting out perfect mise-en-scène is extremely high praise. And for Claudine Restaurant, its immaculate setting at Dempsey Hill could not be more perfect.
[Update: California Republic has closed.] Despite being the interconnected metropolis it is, there are still certain cuisines that are scantly featured in Singapore. One of those is Californian cuisine where only a rare few restaurants like Rosemead fly that grizzly bear insignia high. Joining the fray though, is a newly opened California Republic bringing the California dream to Singapore.
The spectacular sight of the Marina Bay Sands has become a common fixture in our dining scene, adding some majesty to many restaurants’ mise-en-scene. I stopped outside a pair of hefty wooden doors along Tanjong Pagar — rustic, brown, and not all that enticing. I had arrived for my lunch tasting menu at Restaurant Euphoria, recently christened No. 41 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Expectations were running high. My heart was swelling with anticipation.
Izakayas are, more often than not, set to a blueprint — the decades-tested template of an unassuming, stripped-down watering hole decked in simple wooden furniture while sake bottles perch on ledges, and Japanese salarymen go about their merrymaking without a care in the world. Indian food to many Singaporeans typically means a few dishes — Prata, Briyani, Butter Chicken and the like. But it’s so much richer and diverse than that and the swanky new Firangi Superstar is here to shake up those preconceived notions.
I’m not usually one to put restaurants on blast — I’d give constructive feedback and will leave satisfied if they’re receptive. However, Santi’s Pizza was an extreme outlier in that regard and my frustration has to be channelled somewhere.
