Yakitori has been having its moment in the spotlight in the Singapore Japanese food sphere as places like Yatagarasu have been unearthed and propelled into the spotlight in recent years. Some places might be mere pedestrian experiences that bring you the simplest pleasures but there are some stellar gems getting unearthed — like the brand new Torimaro.
[Update: Park Bench Deli has closed.] Park Bench Deli has long staked a claim as the best sandwich maker in Singapore, creating beloved icons such as their Pastrami and Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches that have etched their mark on the cafe scene.
Izakayas are, more often than not, set to a blueprint — the decades-tested template of an unassuming, stripped-down watering hole decked in simple wooden furniture while sake bottles perch on ledges, and Japanese salarymen go about their merrymaking without a care in the world. Singapore’s food scene has seen no lack of cafes specialising in pastries, but not many can boast of being a mainstay in the scene for as long as Pantler has been.
I’m not usually one to put restaurants on blast — I’d give constructive feedback and will leave satisfied if they’re receptive. However, Santi’s Pizza was an extreme outlier in that regard and my frustration has to be channelled somewhere.
I still remember my first experience of chef Rishi Naleendra’s culinary genius. It was 2017, at Cheek By Jowl, right after he snagged his first Michelin star. This Boon Tat Street spot has been the cornerstone of his career, host to a slew of creative Cheek concepts before the new Fool Wine Bar has taken over.
Mexican food is always a jolly affair, filled with copious amounts of tortillas, tacos, margaritas. It’s hard not to feel all pumped up when you’re digging into all those hearty flavours, while juices drip all over and sauces smother your lips.
[Update: Le Vin Levain has since rebranded into Drunker Farmer and subsequently Common Man Night Shift.] With an ever-growing wave of Artisan Pizza parlours popping up all over Singapore, we’re spoilt for choice. Out of all of them, Le Vin Levain is one that has challenged my perception of price tag vis-a-viz Pizza quality.
[Update: Catfish has since undergone a significant revamp with a new Izakaya concept.] Chef Andrew Walsh (chef-owner of Cure, Club Street Wine Room, et al) opened one of my most heavily anticipated restaurant openings in Singapore in 2020 — Catfish at Telok Ayer.
Merci Marcel is undoubtedly one of the most beloved cafes in Singapore (and a personal fav), bringing great vibes and great food with a quirky French flair. They are advancing their brand with a new crepe concept, French Fold.
