I still remember the first time I stepped into Kafe Utu in 2018, just a week after they opened. Rustic wooden accents, streaks of raw earthy tones, and a glamorous pop of colour made it stand out in the Keong Saik hood.
If you’re a frequent bar hopper in Singapore, you’d know of the experimental cocktail maestros Native who were ranked 18th on 2021’s World 50 Best Bars rankings. Most of us were excited to hear of their swanky new bar concept named Analogue Initiative at CHIJMES which opened last year.

Mexican food is always a jolly affair, filled with copious amounts of tortillas, tacos, margaritas. It’s hard not to feel all pumped up when you’re digging into all those hearty flavours, while juices drip all over and sauces smother your lips.
Countless people vouch for Pasta Bar as the epitome of pasta making in Singapore. With a name as confidently chic and simple as “Pasta Bar”, you’d expect great finesse worthy of its moniker of being the pasta bar.
[Update: Salted & Hung has closed. Chef-Owner Drew Nocente has since opened a new concept, Cenzo.] Salted & Hung is a place that’s nestled deep into the crevices of my heart. Well, most Unlisted Collection concepts are infatuations. Needless to say, I found myself excitedly grabbing a table when they launched their redesigned set course menu in May, right before the dreaded dine-out restrictions hit again.
Gather was one of the most hyped openings of 2020, a Crepe specialist cafe opened by an experienced Cafe group? That’s something that hasn’t been done before.
It wasn’t surprising when Burger & Lobster opened at Jewel Changi in 2019. You’d have heard of many Singaporeans flocking to their London outlet, much like Flat Iron — which inspired the popular Featherblade.
[Update: Catfish has since undergone a significant revamp with a new Izakaya concept.] Chef Andrew Walsh (chef-owner of Cure, Club Street Wine Room, et al) opened one of my most heavily anticipated restaurant openings in Singapore in 2020 — Catfish at Telok Ayer.
[Update: Wild Rocket and Roketto Izakaya have closed. Willin Low still operates out of Cluny Court with Relish by Wild Rocket.] We have a lot of fusion restaurants in the scene, but none as unapologetically Singaporean as the popular mod sin concepts by celebrity chef Willin Low, especially his crowning jewel Roketto Izakaya.
